Description

William Morris (1834–1896) was a Victorian-era polymath — poet, novelist, textile designer, wallpaper artist, typographer, political activist, and one of the founding fathers of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Born into a wealthy family in Walthamstow, England, Morris studied at Oxford, where he fell under the spell of medieval art, Gothic architecture, and the writings of John Ruskin. What began as an aesthetic obsession became a lifelong crusade.

His iconic patterns — Willow Bough, Strawberry Thief, Acanthus, Woodpecker — drew from the natural world: birds, flowers, vines, and fruit, rendered with extraordinary botanical detail and a deep reverence for the organic rhythms of nature. More than 130 years after his death, Morris's designs remain among the most recognized and beloved in the history of decorative art, displayed in the Victoria & Albert Museum and homes around the world.

The Woodpecker Fine Fruit Tree

In 1885, Morris completed Woodpecker, one of his most celebrated tapestry designs, The design is quintessential Morris: a magnificent woodpecker perches amid a lush tangle of fruit-laden branches, intertwining leaves, and blossoming flowers — all rendered with the botanical precision and decorative richness that defined the movement he led. Morris believed that art should not be the privilege of the few, but woven into the fabric of everyday life. "Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful," he famously declared.
