Description

Among the late works of Gustav Klimt, the figure paintings of 1916–1918 represent the final, most liberated expression of his decorative genius. Released from the demands of portrait commissions — from the need to render the psychological particularity of a specific sitter — Klimt turned increasingly to the pure study of the female figure: the body as form, as pattern, as surface, dissolving into and emerging from the ornamental field that surrounds it.

Before vs After — Gustav Klimt The Dancer Tapestry

The Dancer belongs to this extraordinary late flowering. The figure — seen in a characteristic Klimt pose, the body turning, the weight shifting, the head inclined — is rendered with the economy and precision of a draughtsman who had spent decades studying the human form. But the body is only part of the composition: around and beneath it, Klimt’s ornamental imagination moves freely across the canvas, weaving patterns of extraordinary richness — floral motifs, geometric interlocking forms, the influence of Japanese woodblock prints and Chinese textile design that had captivated him since the 1890s.

Klimt died in February 1918, three months after completing some of his greatest late works, a victim of the influenza pandemic that swept through a Europe already devastated by war. The Dancer stands among the final achievements of one of the most original artistic minds of the 20th century.
