Description

In 1913, Gustav Klimt completed one of the most ambitious and psychologically complex works of his career. The Maiden — Die Jungfrau — marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of his art: the point at which the pure decorative splendour of the golden phase gives way to something deeper, more turbulent, and more human.

Before vs After — Gustav Klimt The Maiden Tapestry

At the centre of the composition, a young woman sleeps — or dreams — suspended in the vortex of a great swirling mass of female figures. She is the virgin of the title: innocent, unconscious, not yet awakened to the knowledge of sexuality and time that the other figures around her embody. Those figures — older, their faces marked by experience and longing — seem to orbit her like planets around a sun, or like memories around a moment of pure possibility.

The composition draws on the great tradition of the Lebensalter — the Ages of Woman — that Klimt had explored since his early ceiling paintings for the University of Vienna. But where those earlier works were allegorical and programmatic, The Maiden is intimate and psychological: less a statement about the human condition than a meditation on the interior life, on the passage from innocence to experience, on the dreams that sustain us and the time that takes them away.
