About the Artwork

The Unicorn Tapestries — also known as The Hunt of the Unicorn — are among the greatest surviving works of medieval art. Created around 1495–1505, most likely in the Southern Netherlands (present-day Belgium), these seven monumental tapestries were woven for an unknown patron of extraordinary wealth and taste, possibly to commemorate a royal marriage.

The Unicorn Purifies the Water is the second panel of the series and one of its most visually arresting compositions. It depicts a magnificent white unicorn dipping its spiraling horn into a stream, purifying the water so that a gathering of hunters, noblemen, and animals — including lions, leopards, stags, and rabbits — may safely drink. The scene is set against a richly detailed mille-fleurs (thousand flowers) background, a hallmark of the finest Flemish tapestry tradition.

The unicorn's horn, known as the alicorn, was believed in medieval lore to possess the power to neutralize poison and purify water — making the unicorn a symbol of purity, divine grace, and Christ-like sacrifice. The tapestry is also a masterpiece of naturalistic observation, featuring over 100 identifiable plant species woven into its verdant ground.

The original tapestries are now housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's The Cloisters in New York City, where they are considered among the museum's most treasured possessions and among the finest examples of medieval European art in existence.
