Description

Around 1482, in the workshops of Florence, Sandro Botticelli completed one of the most enigmatic and beautiful paintings in the history of Western art. La Primavera — the Allegory of Spring — was painted in tempera on a large wooden panel, most likely commissioned by Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de’ Medici, a cousin of Lorenzo the Magnificent, for the Villa di Castello outside Florence. It has captivated scholars, poets, and lovers of beauty ever since.

The painting unfolds like a dream across a dark orange grove. At the far right, Zephyr, the biting wind of March, pursues the nymph Chloris, transforming her as he touches her into Flora, the goddess of flowers, who scatters blooms across the earth. At the centre stands Venus, goddess of love, presiding over the scene with serene authority, while above her Cupid aims his arrow blindly at the Three Graces, who dance in an eternal circle of beauty, chastity, and pleasure. To the left, Mercury — messenger of the gods — disperses the last clouds of winter with his caduceus, clearing the sky for the season to come.

Most critics read the painting as an allegory of Spring’s arrival: the transformation of the cold world into abundance, beauty, and love. But Botticelli’s Primavera has never yielded all its secrets, and that mystery is part of its enduring power. It remains one of the most discussed, most reproduced, and most beloved paintings in the world — a supreme achievement of the Italian Renaissance.
