About the Gustav Klimt Tree of Life Kiss

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was the founding president of the Vienna Secession and the defining voice of the Art Nouveau movement in Central Europe. His work fused the decorative traditions of Byzantine mosaic, Japanese woodblock print, and ancient Egyptian art into a visual language entirely his own — sensuous, symbolic, and drenched in gold.

The Tree of Life, created between 1905 and 1909 as part of the Stoclet Frieze commission, is one of Klimt’s most ambitious decorative works. Its spiralling branches — alive with eyes, spirals, and organic forms — reach across the canvas in an endless, hypnotic rhythm, symbolising the eternal cycle of life, death, and renewal. It is a painting about connection: the roots that bind us to the earth, the branches that reach toward the infinite.

The Kiss — painted between 1907 and 1908 and now permanently housed in the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna. The couple, enveloped in flowing golden robes adorned with contrasting geometric and floral patterns, kneel at the edge of a flower-strewn cliff, suspended in a timeless moment of love and transcendence. It is widely regarded as the defining image of the Art Nouveau movement and one of the most recognized paintings in the world.

Together, these two works form a vision of extraordinary completeness: the cosmic and the intimate, the eternal and the momentary, the world-tree and the human heart — all rendered in Klimt’s incomparable golden language.
