In 1907, Gustav Klimt completed what would become the most celebrated portrait of the 20th century. Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I — known to the world as The Woman in Gold — was the culmination of three years of obsessive preparation: hundreds of preparatory drawings, and a canvas encrusted with genuine gold and silver leaf, Byzantine mosaic patterns, and the swirling, hypnotic ornament that defined Klimt's golden phase.

Adele Bloch-Bauer was the wife of Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, one of Vienna's most prominent industrialists and a passionate patron of the arts. She was the only model Klimt ever painted twice, and the portrait he made of her is unlike anything else in the history of painting: the figure and the background dissolve into one another in a shimmering field of gold, the boundary between person and pattern, between woman and icon, deliberately erased. It is simultaneously a portrait, a Byzantine mosaic, and a declaration that beauty itself is sacred.

The painting's history is as extraordinary as its appearance. Seized by the Nazis during the Second World War, it was restituted to Adele's niece, Maria Altmann, in 2006 after a landmark legal battle — a story that captivated the world and inspired the film Woman in Gold. Today it hangs in the Neue Galerie in New York, where it was acquired for $135 million, then the highest price ever paid for a painting.

This tapestry brings Klimt's golden masterpiece into your home, faithfully reproduced in the finest Belgian Jacquard tradition.
